June 2009 Meeting Summary

Board of directors:

• Shiloh Ballard, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, discussed and answered questions regarding the Green Building Collaborative Phase II Recommendations. The recommendations can be found on the SCCCA website at http://www.sccca.gov/Packet/Board.htm   The Board voted to forward the Phase II recommendations to the individual cities for adoption.
• Doug Moretto, Sunnyvale Police, Tony Lopez, Mountain View Police, and Gay Krause, Chair of the Mountain View-Los Altos-Los Altos Hills Challenge Team discussed effort toward gang prevention. Sunnyvale also has a Challenge Team. The teams are community-based and are a non-profit partnership of students, school districts, police departments, community organizations, parent groups and health service groups. The teams collaborate to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and other drug-related problems, including gang prevention. The thrust is prevention and intervention and the presenters believe that working together is making a difference in the youth of today and the health and productivity of the community’s future.  
• Carole Leigh Hutton, United Way Silicon Valley, presented an update on the County’s 2-1-1 service which is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week information and referral service by telephone and online. It matches community members with more than 3,000 health and human services provided by government and the social service sector. Many communities support the service financially each year. Ms. Hutton requested the SCCCA endorse the continued funding and consider having each city/town have the 2-1-1 service funding as an ongoing part of local government budgets.
• Yoriko Kishimoto (Palo Alto) and Sue Garner (Monte Sereno), City Selection Committee appointees to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, gave a report on the District’s Major Initiatives in 2009. • David Knapp, Cupertino City Manager, reported the managers discussed a JPA for the Radio Interoperability Project, Fire Chiefs’ EMS issues, and Retirement Costs.
• Betsy Shotwell, San Jose, gave an update to the budget discussions in Sacramento and how some budget options can affect cities. Betsy reported that State Controller John Chiang has stated the state will run out of money by July 29, 2009.
• Appointed Raania Moysen as the new Executive Director. Raania currently works in State Senator Elaine Alquist’s office. Raania will be trained by Joanne in August and will start as the Executive Director September 1, 2009.

Joys and Challenges:

• Cities are sponsoring and hosting a number of summer events and Board members invited all to attend.
• Kris Wang requested information on how School Resource Officers are funded.
