October 2008 Meeting SummarY

 

Board of directors:

  • Received an informational report from Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, Santa Clara County Health Officer, on Menu labeling legislation, SB 1420 (Pedilla) that was signed into law in September 2008. Dr. Fenstersheib also discussed where cities can take the lead in the health of their communities and distributed a Healthy Trails pamphlet – a great way to get fit while you connect with nature.
  • Received an informational update report from Chris Block, Chair of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Ending Homelessness and Solving the Affordable Housing Crisis in Santa Clara County. Chris covered the findings of the commission along with its recommendations.
  • Dan Furtado, Campbell City Council Member, urged cities to participate in the Great America Clean-Up Program. This year the event is scheduled for April, but cities can set their own programs and dates. The committee for the program is looking for all 15 cities in the county to participate.
  • Passed a resolution in support of Solar Permitting Standardization. Greg Sellers urged cities to complete a basic survey being distributed to city public works staff and encouraged cities to participate in a “Solar Permitting Working Group” to be co-facilitated and convened by the Cities Association and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.
  • Passed resolutions in support of Measure A, Measure B, and Proposition 1 A on the November 4 ballot.
  • President Pinheiro announced there would be a discussion at the November Board Meeting on single-use plastic bags. The Recycling Waste and Reduction Commission and its Technical Advisory Committee is working on a countywide regulation. Final recommendations for an ordinance will be submitted to the Cities Association in early 2009.
  • Dean Chu, City Selection Committee representative to MTC, gave an informational report on what is happening at MTC. Topics Dean discussed include the Regional Transportation Plan which is in the process of being updated, Hot Lanes, Ramp Metering Program, and SB 375 (Steinberg) signed into law that requires MTC to adopt a sustainable communities strategy.
  • Nominating Committee: Kris Wang reported the slate for 2009 Executive Board as follows: President – Kris Wang; 1st Vice President – David Casas; 2nd Vice President – Kathleen King; Secretary/Treasurer – Sam Liccardo; Director at Large – Otto Lee; Legislative Action Chair – Dan Furtado; Immediate Past President – Al Pinheiro. The election will take place at the November Meeting. Nominations from the floor may be submitted at that time.
  • Appointment of Executive Director: President Pinheiro announced the subcommittee met again and reviewed the report of the reference checks and recommended the appointment of Joyce Iwasaki. Ms. Iwasaki has agreed to accept the position and the Board passed the recommendation for appointment.
  • Announcements:
    • President Pinheiro reminded Board Members to mark their calendars for this year’s Holiday Party on Thursday, December 4.
    • Joanne announced there will be a City Selection Committee on November 13 to make two appointments to the Bay Area Air Quality Management Board. Information regarding the positions will be circulated to the cities.
